On Thursday 22nd September, just after midnight, Tom Shaw set off for the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (Uhuru Peak, meaning “Freedom”) from his last high camp (Barafu), at 4600m.
The first six hours of the ascent were steep and in darkness. At 06:00, as he reached Stella Point at 5735m on the crater rim, the sun came up presenting a glorious sunrise. Just over an hour later, after a gently rising traverse on the rim, he reached the summit at 5895m. Magnificent!
To date Tom has raised £1750 in aid of Camsley Grange RDA Group, although his Just Giving webpage will continue to accept donations for some time if anybody wishes to donate to the group in recognition of his efforts.
